Strong winds of up to 70 mph are set to batter much of the UK today, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning affecting millions of residents, including those in Oundle, Northamptonshire. Gusts between 50 and 60 mph are forecast across inland areas, with coastal regions and higher ground facing the strongest conditions.
The warning covers England, Wales, and parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland from early morning until late afternoon. Transport networks face significant disruption, with delays expected to road, rail, air, and ferry services. Power cuts are likely, whilst falling trees and building damage pose additional risks to communities.
Oundle and surrounding Northamptonshire areas will experience a particularly blustery day, with temperatures between 8-10 degrees Celsius. The strongest winds are anticipated during morning and early afternoon hours, though unsettled conditions will persist throughout the day. Central and eastern England sit squarely within the warning zone.
Residents are urged to secure garden furniture, trampolines, and other loose outdoor items. Drivers of high-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorbikes must exercise extreme caution due to sudden strong gusts. Pedestrians should avoid walking near older buildings or trees during peak wind periods and check travel updates before journeys.
The severe weather stems from a deep low-pressure system tracking across the North Atlantic, bringing powerful westerly winds. Coastal communities face additional hazards from larger waves and spray affecting seafront properties and coastal paths.
The Met Office continues monitoring conditions and will update forecasts as the weather system develops.
