The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain affecting Telford and Wrekin, including the area around Lilleshall National Sports Centre. The warning, which comes into effect from early Friday morning and is expected to last until Saturday afternoon, highlights the potential for significant rainfall to cause localised flooding and disruption to travel across the region.
Forecasters anticipate rainfall accumulations could reach between 20-40mm in many areas, with isolated spots potentially seeing up to 60mm over the 36-hour period. This volume of rain, falling on already saturated ground, increases the risk of surface water flooding and could lead to difficult driving conditions on major roads and smaller routes. Public transport services may also experience delays or cancellations.
Alongside the heavy rain, strong winds are also forecast for the area. Gusts could reach speeds of 35-40 mph, particularly in more exposed locations. While not as severe as previous storms, these winds could exacerbate the impact of the rain, potentially leading to fallen branches and further disruption. Temperatures are expected to remain relatively mild for the time of year, hovering between 10°C and 12°C throughout the warning period.
Across the wider UK, the weather system is bringing varied conditions. Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland are also under similar yellow warnings for rain and wind, with western coastal areas particularly susceptible to strong gusts up to 50 mph. Meanwhile, eastern parts of England may experience a slightly drier but still breezy outlook. Wales is expected to bear the brunt of the heavy rainfall alongside the West Midlands.
Residents in Telford and Wrekin are advised to take precautionary measures. This includes checking local flood alerts, clearing drains if safe to do so, and securing any outdoor items that could be dislodged by strong winds. Drivers should exercise caution, reduce speed, and be aware of increased spray and potential standing water on roads.
