Thunderstorms will batter parts of the UK today as the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning covering large areas including Northampton, with heavy downpours and lightning strikes expected until 9pm.
The warning, active from midday until 21:00 BST, covers significant portions of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Forecasters warn of heavy rain, hail and gusty winds reaching 30-40 mph that could cause localised flooding and transport disruption.
The East Midlands, West Midlands, parts of the South East, and Yorkshire and Humber face the greatest risk in England. Scotland will see isolated showers, whilst Wales and Northern Ireland also fall under the yellow warning with similar risks of heavy rain and lightning.
Urban areas and roads are particularly vulnerable to flooding, which could create difficult driving conditions and delays to public transport. Temperatures will remain mild between 18°C and 22°C, but the intensity of downpours poses the main concern.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity. The Met Office warns against driving through floodwaters, where depths can be deceptive and currents strong. Power outages are also possible.
The unsettled conditions follow a pattern of warm, humid air clashing with cooler fronts - creating ideal conditions for thunderstorm development. The Met Office will continue monitoring conditions and updating warnings as necessary throughout the day.
