Residents across Essex, including Rayleigh, are bracing for a period of heavy rainfall this Sunday as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning. The alert, which covers much of the South East and East of England, will be active from 3 AM on Sunday, 21st April, extending through to 6 PM the same day. This follows a period of unsettled weather, with forecasters indicating a significant chance of disruption.
The warning highlights the potential for 20-30mm of rain to fall quite widely across the affected regions, including Rayleigh. However, isolated areas could experience much higher accumulations, with some spots potentially seeing 40-50mm of rainfall over the 15-hour period. Such volumes increase the risk of localised flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage or where the ground is already saturated.
For Rayleigh, temperatures during Sunday are expected to remain relatively mild for the time of year, hovering between 12-14°C. Wind speeds are anticipated to be light, generally around 5-10 mph, meaning that while the rain will be heavy, it is unlikely to be accompanied by strong gusts. However, the sheer volume of precipitation could lead to challenging driving conditions and potential delays for those travelling.
Across the wider UK, while the focus for this particular warning is on the South East and East of England, other regions are also experiencing varied weather. Scotland and Northern Ireland are generally forecast to have a mix of sunshine and scattered showers, with temperatures in the low teens. Wales can expect similar conditions to England, with some eastern parts of the country potentially catching the edge of the rain band, though not under the current yellow warning.
The Met Office advises residents in the affected areas to take precautions. This includes checking local flood alerts, ensuring gutters and drains are clear, and planning journeys with potential delays in mind. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, use headlights, and be aware of spray and surface water on roads. Pedestrians should also exercise caution, particularly near roads and waterways.
The public is encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and warnings from the Met Office throughout the weekend. Further updates will be provided should the situation escalate or if new warnings are issued for other parts of the country.
