Heavy rain threatens to bring flooding to Peebles and the Scottish Borders from Wednesday afternoon, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for the region.
The alert runs from noon on Wednesday, 19th June until 3am Thursday, covering a 15-hour period that could see up to 40mm of rainfall across the area. Some isolated spots may receive as much as 60mm, raising concerns about localised surface water flooding in low-lying areas where drainage systems struggle to cope.
Forecasters warn of difficult driving conditions due to standing water and reduced visibility, urging motorists to take extra care. Temperatures will drop to a cooler 10-12°C during the warning period, marking a notable change from recent milder weather.
The unsettled conditions spreading across Scotland contrast with a more mixed picture elsewhere in the UK. Northern England may see scattered showers, whilst Wales and Northern Ireland face a combination of sunshine and occasional downpours with temperatures in the mid-teens. Southern England is likely to stay drier and brighter for longer, though more changeable weather is expected by week's end.
Residents in the warned area should check local flood alerts and clear drains of debris where safe to do so. The Met Office advises drivers to reduce speed, use headlights and maintain safe distances, whilst pedestrians should avoid fast-flowing water and flooded areas.
