Powerful winds of up to 60 mph are battering the UK today, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning that covers Chester and vast swathes of the country until 23:59 BST tonight.
The warning, which began at 10:00 BST, affects millions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Chester and the wider Cheshire West region face gusts of 40-50 mph, whilst exposed coastal areas and higher ground could see winds reach 50-60 mph.
A deep area of low pressure tracking across the North Sea is driving the unsettled conditions. England's North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber, and parts of the Midlands are particularly affected, alongside southern and central Scotland.
Travel disruption is expected across road, rail, air and ferry services, with the Met Office warning of potential power cuts. Coastal communities face additional dangers from large waves and spray. Despite the blustery conditions, temperatures will remain mild at 10-12°C.
The Met Office advises checking travel information before journeys and urges drivers of high-sided vehicles to take extra care. Coastal areas should be avoided during the worst weather.
Residents are being urged to secure garden furniture and loose objects. Emergency services and local authorities have been alerted to potential disruption, with heavy rain likely to accompany the strong winds, particularly in western areas.
The warning comes as communities across the affected regions brace for a day of challenging conditions, with officials emphasising the importance of following safety guidance.
