Strong winds reaching 70mph and heavy rainfall will batter large parts of the UK this weekend, with the Met Office issuing an updated yellow weather warning covering England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The warning takes effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon. Coastal areas in south-west England and western Wales face the most severe gusts of 60-70mph, whilst inland regions can expect winds of 45-55mph capable of damaging trees and infrastructure.
Heavy rainfall will compound the disruption. Western Scotland and mountainous areas of Wales could see 30-50mm of rain, with isolated spots receiving up to 70mm over 36 hours. The downpour on already saturated ground raises the risk of localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions.
In England, the yellow warning covers the South West, South East, Midlands, and parts of the North West and North East. Wales faces similar conditions with the strongest winds along its western coast. Scotland's southern and western regions are included, alongside Northern Ireland where gusty winds and persistent rain are expected.
The Met Office urges residents to secure loose garden items including trampolines and furniture. Motorists should exercise caution, particularly on exposed routes and near high-sided vehicles, and check for road closures or transport delays before travelling. The public is advised to avoid exposed coastal areas during peak conditions due to large waves and flying debris.
Meteorologists continue monitoring the evolving weather system, with further updates expected as conditions develop over the weekend.
