The UK is set for a sizzling heatwave this weekend, with the Met Office warning of potentially record-breaking temperatures in parts of England. Forecasts indicate that the Midlands and South East will be among the first regions to feel the heat, with thermometers expected to soar into the high 20s Celsius.
As warmer air from the continent moves in, a prolonged period of high pressure and sunshine is predicted, leading to health concerns for vulnerable individuals. The Met Office has stressed that temperatures could reach above 30C in isolated areas, while other parts of the country can expect pleasant, warm conditions, with temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius.
The regions expected to be hit hardest include Greater London, Kent, and Essex, alongside Birmingham and Leicestershire. In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, temperatures will rise, but generally remain a few degrees cooler than their English counterparts. Even so, these areas can still expect pleasant weather, with moderate warmth.
The Met Office is advising the public to take precautions, particularly regarding sun exposure and hydration. This includes staying out of direct sunlight during peak hours (11 am-3 pm), drinking plenty of water, and wearing light, loose-fitting clothing. Those with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, and young children are urged to be extra cautious.
While wind speeds will remain moderate, generally below 10-15 mph, the lack of a strong breeze may make temperatures feel even more intense. This heatwave marks a significant shift from earlier in the month's cooler, wetter conditions, ushering in typical summer weather.
The Met Office is closely monitoring the situation, with long-range forecasts suggesting these warmer conditions could persist for several days. The public is advised to stay informed through official updates and local news channels for the latest information and advice.
