The first warning pertains to strong winds, which are forecast to impact coastal areas and higher ground primarily across parts of England and Wales. Gusts could reach speeds of 60-70 mph in exposed locations, particularly along the coastlines. Inland areas are also expected to experience strong winds, albeit slightly less severe, with speeds potentially reaching 40-50 mph. Concurrently, a yellow warning for heavy rain has been issued, predominantly affecting parts of Scotland and northern England. Forecasters predict that many areas within the warning zone could see 30-50mm of rain. However, higher ground, particularly in western Scotland, could experience accumulations of up to 70mm over the warning period. This volume of rainfall increases the risk of localised flooding, particularly in areas already saturated from recent wet weather, and could lead to difficult driving conditions and potential delays on roads and public transport.
For England, the wind warning covers regions including the North West, North East, and parts of the Midlands, extending southwards into Wales, particularly along its western coast. The rain warning for England is concentrated on the North West, especially Cumbria. In Scotland, the rain warning is more widespread, encompassing much of the central belt and western Highlands, areas prone to heavy rainfall. Northern Ireland is currently not under a direct warning, but residents are advised to remain vigilant as conditions can change rapidly.
