The Met Office has sounded a warning as widespread heavy rain and snow risk sweep across the UK this weekend, affecting large areas of England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. The agency's series of yellow weather warnings span much of the country, with forecasts predicting significant precipitation from Saturday morning through to Sunday afternoon.
England is set for prolonged periods of heavy rain, particularly in the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber, West Midlands, and South West regions. Up to 30-40mm of rain could fall widely, with isolated spots potentially seeing 50-60mm – especially over hills – raising the risk of localised flooding and disruption to transport networks. Temperatures will remain chilly, ranging from 5-8 degrees Celsius, feeling colder due to wind.
In Wales, a yellow warning for rain has been issued, with similar totals expected across the country, particularly in central and southern areas. The saturated ground from recent weeks combined with further heavy rain could exacerbate flood risks. Northern Ireland faces a yellow warning for rain throughout Saturday, posing a risk of surface water flooding in urban areas and on roads.
Scotland's weather will be distinctly cold, with temperatures struggling to rise above 3-6 degrees Celsius. Higher elevations face a risk of snow on Sunday, particularly in the Grampians and Highlands, where wintry showers and accumulation are possible.
The Met Office advises preparing for potential impacts, including difficult driving conditions, longer journey times, and possible power cuts. Residents should check local flood alerts and ensure homes are prepared for adverse weather. This weekend's cold front will bring a stark contrast to the milder conditions earlier in the week, with temperatures dipping across the board.
