A woman who police believe was raped in Streatham is being urgently sought by the Metropolitan Police after CCTV captured a distressing incident in the early hours of Friday morning.
Officers reviewed footage showing a man and woman entering an alleyway at the junction of Streatham Common North and Hermitage Lane at approximately 01:25 BST on 24 May. The woman later emerged visibly distressed, leading police to believe a serious sexual offence had occurred.
Detectives are appealing for the woman to come forward so they can offer support and understand what happened. They have assured that any contact will be handled with complete sensitivity, with her welfare as their primary concern.
A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and released on bail whilst enquiries continue. Police have not released a detailed description of the woman but hope she or someone who knows her will recognise the circumstances.
The case highlights the challenges officers face when victims may be unable or reluctant to report incidents themselves. The Met's proactive approach, using CCTV evidence to launch investigations without an initial victim report, demonstrates their commitment to pursuing serious sexual offences and ensuring support reaches those who need it.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police directly.
