The streets of London's transport network have become increasingly hostile in recent months, with a stark 56% surge in reported crimes over the past year sparking outrage among commuters. New data reveals a disturbing trend, with a 26% rise in sexual offences and a 110% jump in robberies on public transport.
According to the statistics, which span from September 2022 to September 2023, other notable increases include a 70% hike in thefts. The Metropolitan Police are facing intense scrutiny over their handling of the situation, with the London Assembly's Police and Crime Committee questioning their strategy and effectiveness in ensuring passenger safety.
Committee member Caroline Russell AM expressed her deep concern over the increase in sexual offences, stating that a robust and visible policing presence is vital to deter offenders and reassure commuters. However, the Met Police have attributed some of the increases to improved reporting mechanisms and the return to pre-pandemic passenger numbers, providing more opportunities for crime.
The Metropolitan Police pointed out their efforts alongside the British Transport Police (BTP) and Transport for London's (TfL) extensive CCTV network. The Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) also highlighted increased targeted operations on the transport network, with more police officers and PCSOs visible.
Despite these reassurances, concerns persist among opposition parties within the London Assembly, who are calling for greater accountability from the Mayor of London and the Metropolitan Police to address these worrying trends. The safety of commuters, particularly vulnerable groups, hangs in the balance as public confidence in using London's transport system continues to erode.
The pressure is mounting on the Met Police and MOPAC to deliver tangible results and demonstrate their commitment to making the transport network safe for all. They have reiterated ongoing initiatives tackling violence against women and girls, but it remains to be seen whether these efforts will yield a significant impact.
