The Metropolitan Police have issued a travel warning for London ahead of the New Year's Eve celebrations, urging individuals planning to attend events in the capital to meticulously plan their journeys. With significant crowds expected, particularly for the renowned fireworks display near the London Eye, authorities are emphasising the importance of preparation to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all.
This annual advice comes as millions typically descend upon central London to welcome the new year. The police statement highlights that extensive road closures will be implemented across key areas of the city centre from early evening on Sunday, December 31st, which will inevitably impact both vehicular traffic and public transport services.
Transport for London (TfL) is expected to implement altered services and station closures, particularly around the Westminster and Waterloo areas, to manage the anticipated influx of people. While some public transport will operate extended hours, and in some cases be free of charge during specific windows, the advice remains to check real-time updates and plan routes well in advance.
The force also reminded attendees that the fireworks display is a ticketed event, and entry will only be permitted to those with valid tickets. Unticketed spectators are strongly discouraged from attempting to gain access to the viewing areas, as capacity will be strictly controlled. Alternative, less crowded locations across London may offer views of the sky, but these will not provide the direct experience of the ticketed event.
Security measures are also expected to be heightened across the capital, with a visible police presence aimed at ensuring public safety and managing crowd control. Attendees are encouraged to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and follow the instructions of emergency services personnel throughout the evening.
