A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with sexual assault, the force announced today. PC Joseph Demir, 23, who is attached to the Met's Central North Command Unit, faces one count of sexual assault in relation to an incident that reportedly occurred in June 2024.
The charge follows an investigation by the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards. PC Demir was arrested on Tuesday, 18th June, and subsequently charged. He has since been suspended from duty, a standard procedure when an officer faces such serious allegations, ensuring public confidence and allowing the legal process to proceed unimpeded.
The Central North Command Unit covers the boroughs of Islington and Camden. The Metropolitan Police has stated that they are providing support to the complainant involved in the case. Further details regarding the nature of the alleged incident have not been released at this stage, in line with legal protocols surrounding ongoing investigations.
This development comes at a time when the Metropolitan Police is under increased scrutiny regarding officer conduct and standards. The force has been working to rebuild trust and confidence following a series of high-profile cases involving misconduct and criminality within its ranks. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has repeatedly pledged to root out officers who fall short of the required standards.
PC Demir is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 10th July 2024, for his first hearing. The legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the charge, and the Met's internal disciplinary process will run concurrently or subsequently, depending on the criminal outcome.
The force continues to emphasise its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability, both internally and to the public it serves. Incidents of this nature are taken with extreme seriousness and are thoroughly investigated to ensure justice and maintain public trust.
