Two Metropolitan Police officers have made their initial appearance in court in connection with a fatal road traffic collision that tragically claimed the life of a pregnant woman in December 2022. The case, which draws significant public interest, began at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
PC Nadeem Patel stands accused of causing death by dangerous driving, a serious charge that carries a potential prison sentence. Alongside him, PC Gary Smith faces a charge of dangerous driving. Both officers are currently attached to the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command.
The charges stem from an incident on 13 December 2022, in Croydon, south London. The collision resulted in the death of Shante Stephenson, who was pregnant at the time. The circumstances surrounding the crash and the actions of the officers involved are now under judicial scrutiny.
Following the hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court, both officers were granted unconditional bail. Their next appearance is scheduled for the Old Bailey on 15 July, where the case will proceed to a higher court due to the severity of the charges.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) previously investigated the incident, referring its findings to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for a charging decision. This referral led to the charges now being brought against the two officers. Such cases involving police personnel are often subject to intense public and media attention, highlighting the importance of accountability within law enforcement.
