Courts in England and Wales have banned Meta glasses, with His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service (CTS) confirming that the devices will be confiscated from individuals entering judicial buildings. This decision follows similar bans in some restaurants, theatres, and pubs, as well as courts in New York last month.
A spokesperson for the CTS stated that the use of Meta glasses is prohibited due to existing restrictions on taking images or videos within courts and tribunals. While smartphones are permitted, provided they are not used for recording court procedures, no such exception will be made for smart glasses.
Taking images or videos in UK court buildings without official permission is prohibited and can lead to prosecution for contempt of court. The CTS does not have figures on the number of incidents involving smart glasses in courts.
