The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has today, 16 September 2026, issued a National Patient Safety Alert (NatPSA) to support the safe use of patient hoists and slings. This alert applies to health and social care settings, including hospitals, care homes, and private homes.
Patient hoists are used to help transfer people with reduced mobility. A review of recent safety data indicates that serious incidents can happen if these devices are not used, checked, or maintained correctly. These incidents are not linked to a specific manufacturer or model.
Dr Alison Cave, MHRA Chief Safety Officer, stated that patient hoists are vital for safe care, but incorrect use or poor maintenance can have serious consequences. The alert outlines clear actions to help prevent avoidable harm.
The MHRA is urging healthcare organisations, care providers, and individuals using hoists to take urgent steps. These include extensive pre-use checks before every transfer, ensuring hoist and sling compatibility, confirming secure attachments, maintaining records, and ensuring regular inspections and servicing. Additionally, all staff and caregivers should be up-to-date with training and competency assessments.
