Authorities in Michigan have identified Kristopher Karolkiewicz as the man they say fatally shot his wife and six children on Friday in a mass murder described as a family annihilation. Autopsy results cited by the Ottawa County sheriff’s office on Monday confirmed that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his wife Amanda, and their six children, aged five to 15, all died from gunshot wounds.
The agency also stated that Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot himself to death. The fire at their home in Grand Haven Township, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, was evidently set intentionally in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though officials are still investigating its point of origin.
Sheriff Eric DeBoer commented, "This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand." Deputy Captain Jacob Sparks added that the investigation indicates a murder-suicide, with the fire started after the murders. The case remains open as officials seek answers regarding the events leading up to the incident.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, was a vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until his employment ended earlier in July. Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, was described as an elementary school substitute teacher. According to the Gun Violence Archive, Friday's killings were at least the 13th mass murder reported in the US in 2026, with at least eight fitting the definition of a family annihilation.
