Middlesbrough schools to close early for A66 crash funeral

A number of schools in Middlesbrough are scheduled to close early today, Monday 7 September 2026, for the funeral of Theo Rae. Mr Rae, 17, was among seven people who died in a crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of 22 August.

Middlesbrough Council confirmed that some schools have chosen to close early due to the possibility of localised traffic disruption. Outwood Academy Acklam will close at 12:15 BST, Newham Bridge Primary School at 13:00, and Acklam Whin Primary School and Green Lane School in Acklam at 13:15.

Newham Bridge Primary School informed parents that its closure aims to "ensure safe transit home for all our families." Cleveland Police are expected to have similar arrangements in place as they did for a previous funeral on Friday, including a visible police presence.

What this means for you: If your children attend Outwood Academy Acklam, Newham Bridge Primary School, Acklam Whin Primary School, or Green Lane School, they will be dismissed early today.
