Millions of Britons have been targeted by scammers, Citizens Advice warned today, as the charity raised the alarm over the devastating financial and emotional toll of fraud across the UK.
The consumer rights organisation highlighted how criminals are exploiting everything from the cost of living crisis to current events, impersonating government agencies, utility firms and banks to deceive victims. Scammers are continually adapting their tactics, making it increasingly difficult for people to spot genuine communications from fraudulent ones.
The impact extends far beyond immediate financial losses. Victims often suffer significant stress, anxiety and loss of trust, with those on limited incomes particularly vulnerable. Citizens Advice data shows criminals are targeting people through investment fraud, online shopping scams, and bogus benefits or tax rebate schemes.
Whilst specific figures for total losses were not released, the scale suggests the collective financial damage runs into millions of pounds. The charity is urging people to remain sceptical of unsolicited contact by email, text, phone or in person, and to verify identities independently before sharing any personal details.
Despite government efforts through departments including Culture, Media and Sport and the Home Office, alongside law enforcement agencies like the National Crime Agency, the problem persists. Opposition parties continue to demand stronger consumer protections, arguing current measures fail to adequately protect vulnerable citizens from sophisticated online fraud operations.
