Millions of households across the United Kingdom are poised to receive the second part of the Government's Cost of Living Payment, designed to help alleviate the financial pressures of rising inflation. A payment of £300 will be automatically issued to over eight million eligible households between 31 October and 19 November 2023. This marks the second of three payments totalling £900 for the 2023/24 financial year, following an initial £301 distributed in spring.
The support package is targeted at those receiving means-tested benefits, including Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and tax credits. To qualify for this particular payment, individuals must have been entitled to a payment of one of these benefits during the qualifying period, which ran from 18 August to 17 September 2023. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for distributing payments to those on DWP benefits, while HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will handle payments for those solely receiving tax credits.
This initiative comes amidst a sustained period of high inflation, which has significantly impacted household budgets across the country. Energy prices, food costs, and other essential goods and services have seen considerable increases, prompting the Government to implement various support measures. The Cost of Living Payments are intended to provide direct financial assistance to the most vulnerable segments of society, complementing other schemes such as the Energy Price Guarantee.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, reiterated the Government's commitment to supporting households through these challenging economic times. Recipients do not need to apply for the payment; it will be sent out automatically to eligible bank accounts. The DWP has advised recipients to be vigilant against scams and to remember that they will never be asked for personal details or bank information via text or email in relation to these payments. The final instalment of £299 is expected to be distributed in spring 2024.
