New figures released by Citizens Advice indicate that more than five million people across the UK had a parcel lost or stolen in the last year. The consumer charity's research highlights a significant ongoing problem for online shoppers, with one in seven individuals reporting issues with parcel deliveries during the period.
The findings suggest that the rise in online shopping, particularly post-pandemic, has brought with it persistent challenges in the delivery sector. While the convenience of e-commerce is undeniable, the data points to a substantial burden placed on consumers when things go wrong. Resolving these issues is not only a source of frustration but also a considerable time sink, with the average person reportedly spending 5.4 hours attempting to sort out a parcel problem.
Citizens Advice emphasised that under current consumer law, the retailer, not the delivery company, is responsible for ensuring a parcel reaches its customer. This legal position often goes unrecognised by consumers, who are frequently directed to contact the courier directly, leading to confusion and delays in resolution. The charity argues that stronger enforcement of these existing rights is necessary to protect consumers effectively.
The implications of lost or stolen parcels extend beyond mere inconvenience. Many consumers rely on online purchases for essential goods, gifts, or items needed for specific events, making non-delivery or theft particularly impactful. The financial strain of having to repurchase items, coupled with the emotional stress of chasing resolutions, adds to the overall cost borne by individuals.
In response to these findings, Citizens Advice is advocating for a more robust approach to consumer protection in the delivery sector. They are urging regulators and the Government to ensure that retailers and delivery firms are held accountable for their service. This includes clearer communication of consumer rights and more straightforward processes for obtaining refunds or replacements when parcels go missing.
