A sign for the Hallamshire House pub in Sheffield has been returned to the premises more than 25 years after it went missing. The old Ward's brewery sign is thought to have disappeared sometime in the 1990s.
Former regulars Peter and Ann Chamley discovered the sign hanging in a neighbour's apartment while they were living in Brooklyn, New York. They purchased the sign from the neighbour and brought it back to the UK in 2009.
Doug Simpson, the pub's general manager, received an email from Peter Chamley last month regarding the sign. The Chamleys, who are retired engineers now living in Leeds, returned the sign to the pub on 14 July, asking that a donation be made to Sheffield Children's Hospital instead of payment.
Les May, who was the pub's landlord from 1980 to 2001, believes the sign may have been sold to an antiques dealer who shipped items to America. Mr Simpson believes the sign went missing around 1999 when Ward's brewery closed.
