Modal Motors, a new startup founded by Michael Van Steenburg, is developing electric motors designed to operate without rare earth magnets. This initiative aims to reduce the reliance of the US manufacturing sector on China's supply chain for these materials.
Van Steenburg, who has experience building electric motors in North America, argues that other companies attempting to reshore manufacturing still depend on rare earth magnets, for which domestic supply is reportedly years away. He stated that China has previously restricted access to rare earth products.
The startup is developing two products: a small electric motor for drones, fans, blowers, and actuators, designed for minimal mass and maximum torque density and efficiency; and a 'Hybrid Enigma Drive', a flat electric motor for lower-profile applications. Modal Motors is scheduled to compete at TechCrunch Disrupt next month.
