Mohamed Salah, the former Liverpool striker, has completed a surprising move to Trabzonspor, signing a two-year contract that will see him remain with the Turkish club until June 2028. This transfer comes as a shock to many, as Salah opted for Trabzonspor over Istanbul's traditional 'Big Three' clubs – Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas – who typically dominate marquee signings in the Süper Lig.
The deal, disclosed on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP), outlines that Salah will receive a base annual salary of €10m (£8.5m) along with a guaranteed €7m annual signing bonus, bringing his total earnings to €17m per season. The club will cover all tax liabilities, effectively increasing his take-home pay compared to his final Liverpool contract. The agreement also includes performance add-ons, a 5% agent's fee on gross wages, and a 20% royalty on personal merchandise sold through the club's official TS Club retail network.
Trabzonspor's president, Ertugrul Dogan, initiated the move with a text to manager Fatih Tekke during the World Cup. The club's pursuit, which included former winger Mahmoud Hassan (Trézéguet) speaking daily with Salah, ultimately secured the 34-year-old's commitment. Salah expressed his ambition at his signing ceremony, stating, "I came here to win trophies. I am here to bring titles to this club."
The commercial impact of Salah's arrival has been immediate. Within 24 hours of his landing, Trabzonspor sold more than 17,000 season tickets, generating £11m. President Dogan anticipates total projected revenue from tickets, sponsorships, and merchandise during Salah's tenure to approach £22m, effectively self-funding the transfer. This move is also seen as a significant boost for the city of Trabzon, aiming to revitalise itself as a maritime trade, tourism, and logistics hub.
