Victor Montagliani has communicated to Concacaf staff his intention to stand for re-election as the confederation's president next year. This decision will rule him out of contention for the Fifa presidency, where he had been considered a potential challenger to Gianni Infantino.
The Canadian businessman is understood to have conveyed this message to most of Concacaf's 41 member associations. Montagliani reportedly stated his desire to continue serving members in the region during a town hall meeting with Concacaf staff last month.
The Concacaf presidential election is scheduled for the first quarter of next year, ahead of the Fifa vote on 18 March in Rabat. Montagliani was elected Concacaf president ten years ago following a corruption scandal.
Montagliani, along with Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin and Asian Football Confederation president Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, is expected to advocate for governance reform at Fifa. This includes demanding an independent review of Fifa's Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan and calling for broader reforms during next Thursday's Fifa council meeting in Zurich.
