Motherwell are defying expectations by maintaining a strong start to the season, extending their unbeaten league run to four games. This comes despite a significant overhaul, including the departure of transformational manager Jens Berthel Askou and 11 new players arriving at Fir Park.
Under new manager Alfred Johansson, 35, the club has continued its established identity. Vice-captain Stephen O'Donnell noted the benefit of this continuity for the squad. Motherwell's approach has led to a significant increase in attendances and on-field success.
The club has also seen an unprecedented period of transfer income, totalling more than £10m over the last year. This includes the record sale of Elijah Just to Swansea, following Lennon Miller's previous record-setting transfer to Udinese a year prior. Other key departures include Calum Ward to Queens Park Rangers, Elliot Watt to Samsunspor, and Callum Slattery to Sheffield Wednesday.
Despite a League Cup defeat and an unsuccessful Conference League qualification attempt, Motherwell's league form is strong, with eight points from four fixtures – double their tally at the same stage last season. Johansson's side is reportedly playing with more width and intensity, with increased crosses from wide areas. Their next challenge is an away trip to Ibrox on Saturday.
