Motorcyclist dies after crash on Isle of Lewis A857 road

A 56-year-old motorcyclist has died following a collision with a car on the A857 in the Isle of Lewis on Saturday afternoon.

A motorcyclist has died after a crash on the Stornoway to Ness road in the Isle of Lewis. The incident occurred on the A857 near New Park, Newmarket, at approximately 16:40 on Saturday, 22 August 2026.

The crash involved a black BMW S1000 RS motorcycle and a silver MG car. Emergency services attended, and the 56-year-old male rider was taken to Western Isles Hospital, where he later died. No other injuries were reported.

Police Scotland confirmed that the 44-year-old male driver of the car was arrested in connection with the incident. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the crash. The A857 road was closed for over 12 hours for investigations and reopened around 05:00 on Sunday.

Sgt Scott MacDonald appealed for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage from the area to come forward to assist with the investigation.
