A vehicle rescue group has issued a warning to drivers about using an unsuitable road in the Peak District. Peak 4x4 Response, a charity, has responded to 15 call-outs for stranded motorists on Macclesfield Old Road.
The incidents have occurred along a mile and a half stretch of the road, which Marcus Murray of Peak 4x4 Response described as containing boulders, steps, and washouts, making it unsuitable for standard road vehicles. He stated that people are choosing this route, believing it to be quicker than the official diversion.
Derbyshire County Council is currently resurfacing a section of the A54, the Cat and Fiddle, on the Buxton side of the route. The official diversion runs through the centre of Leek in Staffordshire.
A county council spokesperson said that when roads are closed for safety or essential works, signed diversion routes are provided. They added that drivers are responsible for ensuring their chosen route is suitable for their vehicle and journey.
