Money Saving Expert (MSE) has introduced a new, free service designed to automatically compare and switch household energy tariffs for consumers across the UK. The initiative, named 'MSE Autoswitch', is being hailed as the country's first fully automated comparison and switching tool, aiming to simplify the often-complex process of finding more competitive energy deals.
For many years, consumers have been encouraged to regularly compare energy tariffs to ensure they are on the best available deal. However, the time and effort involved in this process often deter households from switching, potentially leading to them paying more than necessary for their gas and electricity. MSE's new service seeks to remove this barrier by handling the comparison and switching process automatically on behalf of the user.
The launch comes at a time when UK households continue to face elevated energy costs, despite the recent stabilisation of wholesale prices. The energy market has undergone significant changes in recent years, including the collapse of several smaller suppliers and the introduction of the energy price cap by Ofgem. These factors have made it challenging for consumers to navigate the market effectively and secure the most advantageous tariffs.
According to MSE, users sign up for the service, and it then continuously monitors the market for cheaper tariffs from a range of suppliers. When a more cost-effective deal is identified, the service will automatically initiate the switch, notifying the user throughout the process. This approach is intended to ensure that consumers consistently remain on competitive tariffs without needing to proactively search for new deals themselves.
The implications for UK consumers could be substantial. By automating the switching process, MSE hopes to increase engagement in the energy market, potentially driving greater competition among suppliers. This could lead to more innovative tariff offerings and better value for money for households, particularly those who have historically been less active in switching providers. The service is free to use, with MSE stating that it earns a commission from energy suppliers when a switch is completed, but this does not affect the deals offered to consumers.
