West Yorkshire Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man who was bitten by a dog in Wakefield. Officers were dispatched after 1.30pm on Saturday, 15 August 2026, following reports of an altercation on an old trainline footpath.
During the altercation, a 55-year-old man was bitten by a dog. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died shortly after 7pm on the same day.
Police said a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control in a public place causing injury. He remains in custody, and a dog believed to be involved in the incident has been seized.
DCI Michael Cox stated that the homicide and major inquiry team are investigating the death. Detectives are appealing for witnesses, particularly two women, one named Sophie, who reportedly helped the injured man and directed officers. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
