Music Videos Evolve as MTV Axes Channels and TikTok Rises

The purpose of music videos has shifted with the growth of social media platforms, even as award shows like the VMAs continue to attract major artists.

  • MTV axed five music channels in the UK last year after almost 40 years.
  • Cinematographer Melissa Cofie states that music videos now serve more to connect with artists and express their vision.
  • Taylor Swift broke the record for most MTV VMA wins last weekend.

The landscape of music videos has significantly evolved, moving away from the era of continuous play on TV channels like MTV. Last year, MTV ceased broadcasting five music channels in the UK, nearly 40 years after their inception, in response to changing viewing habits.

Despite these changes, award ceremonies such as the Video Music Awards (VMAs) continue to draw prominent music figures. Taylor Swift, Madonna, and Charli XCX were among the artists who attended on Sunday to receive awards and perform.

Cinematographer Melissa Cofie notes that while these shows may appear performative, they are crucial for those in the music industry, highlighting the extensive effort involved in producing a music video. Cofie believes the purpose of music videos has evolved, now serving more as a means for artists to connect with fans and express their vision, rather than being a primary component of a press campaign as they were in the 2000s.

Artists like Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo still heavily rely on videos to create visual worlds for their albums. Swift, who recently set a new record for MTV VMA wins, is known for her high-budget productions, which fans often scrutinise for hidden clues.

The rise of platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube has fundamentally altered how videos are consumed and created, according to Cofie. She views this not as a setback but as a challenge for creatives to produce engaging, shorter content that quickly captures attention.
