A new campaign targeting tailgating drivers has been launched by National Highways, warning motorists that driving too close remains a major cause of serious accidents on Britain's roads.
The 'Too Close for Comfort' initiative, developed in partnership with the RAC, will use roadside advertising and social media to remind drivers about maintaining safe distances between vehicles. Department for Transport figures show tailgating is a significant contributor to road accidents, particularly rear-end collisions.
The RAC is urging motorists to follow the 'two-second rule' - leaving a two-second gap between vehicles to provide adequate reaction time in emergencies. The motoring organisation says tailgating typically occurs when drivers are distracted or rushing, creating dangerous conditions that can result in vehicle damage and serious injuries to occupants.
National Highways plans to introduce additional measures to tackle the problem, including new speed cameras and enhanced driver education programmes designed to reduce tailgating-related accidents.
The campaign launch comes after several high-profile incidents involving tailgating, including a recent fatal collision where a driver was killed after being struck by a lorry travelling too close behind. Both the Chancellor and Transport Secretary have backed the initiative, with cross-party support for the road safety measure.
