Dual-code international winger Mark Nawaqanitawase delivered a stellar performance, scoring two tries to lead the Sydney Roosters to a narrow 19-18 victory over the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League Premiership Grand Final. The win marks the Roosters' 16th title and their first since 2019.
Nawaqanitawase, who is transitioning back to rugby union to play in Japan, crossed the try line once in each half. His efforts were crucial in preventing a major upset against the Knights, who had finished three places below the Roosters in the regular season.
The Knights, seeking their first title since 2001, mounted a late challenge with Greg Marzhew scoring a try to make it a one-point game. However, the Roosters held on in front of 80,814 fans at Stadium Australia. Nawaqanitawase, 26, expressed his sentiments after the match, stating, "This is going to last me a lifetime. It's sad to go, but I love everyone here, I love all the boys, and let's celebrate this win, far out."
Daly Cherry-Evans, 37, also played his final NRL game, slotting a drop-goal before his move to Super League side Hull FC for the 2027 season.
