Nearly 150 homes in Brechin, Angus, are set for demolition almost three years after being devastated by Storm Babet. Angus councillors have approved plans to demolish 145 houses and flats, along with five garages.
The decision also includes changes to the river's flood defences, with an estimated cost of about £8.2m. Hundreds of residents were displaced when the South Esk breached flood defences in the River Street area in October 2023, with many properties remaining empty since.
Residents have described living in "limbo" due to the ongoing uncertainty. Local councillor Jill Scott stated that while not everyone would be content, the decision would "bring closure" for affected households. She also stressed that no one would be made homeless, with housing officers supporting residents into new homes.
