Deadly flash floods, triggered by a melting glacier high in the Himalayas, have claimed over 1,200 lives in Nepal and Tibet. The glacier crashed into a valley on the border between Nepal and Tibet, setting off floods down Nepal's Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
The settlement of Betrawati was engulfed within minutes on Wednesday morning last week. More than 5,000 people are reported missing in Nepal, and an additional 546 in China-controlled Tibet.
Rescue and relief operations are facing significant challenges due to treacherous conditions, with many aid trucks unable to reach the worst-hit areas. Some villages, like Syabru Besi, were entirely swept away and are only accessible by army helicopter.
In the district of Rasuwa, police search and rescue teams have recovered 90 bodies from the border village of Timure. Survivors are being evacuated by army helicopters to the Dhunche army base.
