A shocking true crime case, which saw a woman falsely imprisoned for a violent revenge scheme, is now being explored in the new Netflix documentary 'A Toxic Love Story'. Michelle Hadley, a graduate student, was arrested in June 2016 and accused of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against her former partner, deputy U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz, and his new wife, Angela. The allegations included sending anonymous threats and posting on the classified ad website Craigslist to solicit men for a 'rape fantasy', directing them to the couple's home in Anaheim, California.
Hadley spent nearly three months behind bars, facing felony charges of attempted forcible rape and stalking, which could have resulted in a life sentence. However, the entire case unravelled in 2017 when the truth emerged, revealing a far more sinister plot. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas later confirmed that Hadley was, in fact, an innocent victim of a 'diabolical scheme' concocted by the very couple who claimed to be her targets.
The elaborate deception began after Hadley and Ian Diaz, who had purchased a condo together with a significant mortgage and a £15,000 down payment from Hadley, ended their relationship in August 2015. Just months later, in February 2016, Diaz married Angela. By May, the couple began receiving threatening emails from an anonymous account. It was later discovered that Ian and Angela Diaz were behind these messages, and their motive was to compel Hadley to drop her claim to her share of the condo.
The couple went to extreme lengths to frame Hadley. They created multiple online accounts in Hadley's name, using them to post and respond to 'rape fantasy' advertisements on Craigslist. This led to several men arriving at their home, where the Diazs staged what an eventual indictment termed 'hoax sexual assaults' before contacting the police. On June 13, 2016, Ian Diaz explicitly directed officers towards Hadley, stating his ex-girlfriend 'needs to be in f***ing cuffs and in a padded room.' The situation escalated on June 24 when Angela Diaz called 911, claiming a man had attempted to rape her in their garage, presenting herself with a torn shirt and redness on her neck and breasts. Hadley was arrested that same day.
The intricate fabrication was exposed through the diligent work of digital forensic investigators. They were able to establish that the 'Lilithistruth' accounts, used for the threatening emails, had been created by Angela Diaz, not Michelle Hadley. Device logs and IP addresses conclusively contradicted the Diazs' narrative, proving Hadley's innocence. The charges against Hadley were dropped in January 2017, leading to Angela Diaz's arrest. In October of that year, Angela Diaz pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts and was sentenced to five years in prison. She also divorced Ian Diaz, bringing a close to the shocking saga.
