Netflix's gripping new series, 'I Will Find You', starring Sam Worthington as wrongly imprisoned father David Burroughs, has reached its conclusion, leaving viewers to unravel the complex web of deceit surrounding the alleged murder of his son, Matthew. Based on the novel by Harlan Coben, the eight-episode thriller follows David's desperate quest for truth after receiving information suggesting his son might still be alive, prompting a daring escape from prison.
The central mystery of Matthew's fate is resolved in the show's final episodes. It is revealed that Matthew (Ashton Cressman) was not, in fact, murdered, but had been alive and held captive for the entire duration. His staged death was orchestrated by Hayden Payne (Milo Ventimiglia), who falsely believed he was Matthew's biological father. This elaborate deception was further compounded by Hayden's mother, Gertrude (Madeleine Stowe), who faked a paternity test to reinforce her son's false belief. In a shocking turn during the finale, Rachel (Britt Lower) confesses to Hayden that Matthew is David's son, as she had never attended the fertility clinic, unlike Cheryl (Erin Richards), who was already pregnant with Matthew.
The lengths Hayden went to maintain his lie were extreme. Earlier in the series, it is disclosed that he murdered a terminally ill child from a Swiss orphanage to create the illusion of Matthew's death. When a Swiss detective investigating the missing child began to close in, Hayden ruthlessly killed him to eliminate any loose ends. The weight of the final revelations leads to a violent confrontation, with Hayden ultimately shooting and killing his own mother, Gertrude, in a moment of extreme anger and disillusionment.
The series culminates in a dramatic showdown at the Payne estate. David and Rachel storm the property, leading to Hayden attempting to flee into the woods with Matthew, whom he had been calling 'Theo'. David tackles Hayden, and in the ensuing struggle, David is shot. However, the arrival of the FBI, accompanied by Rachel, brings the conflict to an end. As Hayden reaches for his weapon, he is shot and killed by FBI agent Sarah Greer (Logan Browning), finally bringing his reign of terror to a halt.
A time jump of eight months reveals the aftermath of these events. While characters gather for a funeral, it is not for David, who thankfully survived his bullet wound. Instead, David's father, Lenny (Hugh Thompson), has passed away, but not before spending six months with his grandson, Matthew. A voiceover confirms that David's conviction for Matthew's alleged murder was overturned, and Rachel has since published a book detailing the harrowing ordeal. Cheryl, meanwhile, has given birth to a baby girl and reconciled with her husband, Ronald (Aaron Ashmore), forgiving him for his past deceptions. The series concludes with David and Rachel holding hands at the funeral, suggesting a future together after their shared trauma.
