Network Rail is urging passengers to travel by train this late May bank holiday weekend despite major engineering works across the country that will disrupt services on key routes.
The rail infrastructure operator says most lines will remain open, providing an alternative to congested motorways as millions travel during the long weekend. However, passengers must check their journeys in advance as significant disruption is expected on popular routes.
Engineering work will hit the West Coast Main Line, London Euston area, and various South East routes. The upgrades are designed to improve reliability and capacity but will require line closures and diversions throughout the weekend. Travellers using major hubs face the greatest risk of disruption to their usual routes.
A Network Rail spokesperson said the upgrades were essential for maintaining a safe and efficient railway system. The organisation acknowledged the inconvenience during busy periods but said bank holidays offered the best opportunity to complete major works with minimal impact on regular commuters.
Passengers should check the National Rail Enquiries website or contact their train operator for specific service changes. Early booking is recommended as seat availability may be limited on altered services.
