New 10p coins, featuring a portrait of King Charles III and an image of the capercaillie, are now entering circulation across the UK. This marks the first time in about four years that newly-minted 10p pieces are being released, driven by sufficient demand.
The Royal Mint has released 600,000 of these coins dated 2023, alongside 6.5 million dated 2026, to banks and post offices nationwide. The reverse side of the coin depicts the capercaillie, a bird found in Scotland and listed on the UK conservation red list due to its rapid population decline.
This new 10p coin is part of a redesigned suite of coins, unveiled in October 2023, which features the UK's flora and fauna on the tails side of every newly-minted coin from 1p to £2. Previously, King Charles III coins in circulation were limited to the 5p, 50p, and £1 denominations. Old coins bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II remain valid for use.
