The BMW X5 has been revamped with an unprecedented range of powertrain options, giving consumers more choices than ever before. In addition to traditional diesel and two plug-in hybrid variants, the new model also features a fully electric version and a hydrogen-powered car slated for release in 2028, developed in collaboration with Toyota.
This shift by BMW marks a strategic departure from its earlier commitment to an all-electric future. The company had initially aimed for a significant proportion of its sales to be electric by the mid-2020s, but the slow adoption of EVs in markets like the UK and ongoing concerns about charging infrastructure and used EV market volatility have prompted a more diversified approach.
The new X5 offers practical choices for UK buyers. The diesel model, featuring mild-hybrid technology, boasts over 40mpg and can run on lower-carbon HVO fuel, ideal for those covering long distances. Meanwhile, company car drivers may favour the plug-in hybrid options or the fully electric iX5, which BMW claims can achieve up to 525 miles on a single charge from its 140kWh battery.
The inclusion of a hydrogen model in 2028 is particularly significant, given the current limitations of UK and European refuelling infrastructure. However, by maintaining a foothold in hydrogen technology, BMW positions itself to benefit if the fuel source gains traction – initially for heavy vehicles rather than mainstream passenger cars.
