A large wildfire continues to spread across the New Forest, with experts indicating the effort to contain it will last for several days. The A31 road, a primary tourist route into the New Forest National Park, was deserted and closed on Tuesday due to the blaze, which started on Sunday evening after a lorry caught fire on the A31 at Ringwood.
Firefighters are attempting to contain multiple hotspots across over 247 acres of dried heathland, facing challenges such as maintaining water supply, difficult terrain, and shifting wind directions. Hampshire fire and rescue service stated they are managing to contain the fire through a mix of fire engines and off-road vehicles, using a police drone to prioritise hotspot areas.
Forestry England, which manages about half of the national park, has asked people to stay away due to the unpredictable nature of the incident. The National Fire Chiefs Council reported that July was the busiest month on record for wildfires, with 458 incidents in July alone this year.
