The government has announced new planning reforms designed to simplify the process of building homes close to train stations. These changes, part of the new National Planning Policy Framework, will introduce a default 'yes' for homes located within a reasonable walking distance of well-connected stations.

The framework also includes new minimum expectations for the amount of housing to be built in these areas. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner stated that unlocking homes around transport hubs will help people live closer to work and services, while also supporting local businesses and driving growth.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey MP, added that making it easier for people to buy homes is about security and helping working people into home ownership. However, Nathan Emerson, CEO of Propertymark, has urged that the proposals be "carefully scrutinised" to prevent the creation of isolated communities.

Why this matters: The reforms aim to address the housing crisis by making it easier to build homes in areas with good transport links.
