New Style Jobseeker's Allowance Eligibility and Application Detailed

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has outlined the criteria for New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), a fortnightly payment available to those unemployed or working less than 16 hours a week.

  • New Style JSA is a contribution-based benefit, typically requiring Class 1 National Insurance contributions in the two full tax years before the claim.
  • Savings and capital do not affect eligibility for New Style JSA, but earnings and pension payments can impact the amount received.
  • Successful applicants can receive New Style JSA for up to 182 days and will be awarded Class 1 National Insurance credits.

New Style Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) is a fortnightly payment for individuals who are unemployed or work less than 16 hours per week. It can be claimed independently or alongside Universal Credit.

Eligibility for New Style JSA is primarily based on an individual's National Insurance record, specifically Class 1 contributions, usually made in the two full tax years preceding the claim. National Insurance credits can also contribute towards eligibility. For claims made on or after 4 January 2026, contributions from the tax years 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025 and 6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024 are typically considered.

Unlike some other benefits, an applicant's savings and capital, or those of their partner, are not taken into account. However, earnings and any pension payments may affect the amount of New Style JSA received. Those who qualify can receive the benefit for up to 182 days and will also be awarded Class 1 National Insurance credits, which can support future State Pension and other contributory benefits.

To apply, individuals need their National Insurance number, bank details, employment history for the past six months, and any private pension statement letters. After an online application, the DWP will respond within 14 days, either inviting the applicant to an interview at a Jobcentre Plus office or explaining why they are not eligible.

Why this matters: New Style JSA provides financial support and National Insurance credits for eligible individuals who are unemployed or working reduced hours.

What this means for you: If you are unemployed or work less than 16 hours a week, you may be able to claim New Style JSA, which is a contribution-based benefit that does not consider your savings.
