Viking has introduced two new river cruises that allow passengers to witness the Oberammergau Passion Play, a unique cultural experience in Bavaria, Germany. Performed once every 10 years, the five-hour epic is a poignant depiction of the suffering of Christ, with its origins dating back to the 17th century.
The villagers of Oberammergau are believed to have made a vow to God in 1633 to perform a play every decade in exchange for being spared from the bubonic plague. This vow has been kept for nearly 400 years, and next year, Viking river cruises on the Rhine or Danube will offer passengers a seat to see this rare performance.
The 13-day 'Oberammergau, Innsbruck & the Rhine' river cruise between Amsterdam and Munich and the 12-day 'Oberammergau with Salzburg' sailing from Oberammergau to Budapest both include flights, transfers, onboard drinks with meals, tours, and WiFi. Prices start from £5,795 per person, with tickets to the Passion Play included.
