Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. This move marks a shift for Newcastle, who had previously signed players exclusively from the continent this transfer window.
The club has recognised the need for Premier League experience after losing key players like Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Kieran Trippier recently. Gonzalez, 24, fits the age profile Newcastle has been targeting for potential development under head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Gonzalez, who previously stated he "did not want to leave" the Etihad, was an unused substitute in Manchester City's recent 2-1 victory over Bournemouth. He will become the fourth senior midfielder to depart City this summer, following Bernardo Silva, Rodri, and Tijjani Reijnders.
