American football fever has gripped Melbourne as the LA Rams prepare to face the San Francisco 49ers in a historic National Football League (NFL) fixture this Friday. The match, which sold out months ago, marks the first time Australia has hosted a meaningful, non-exhibition regular season game.
The game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is expected to draw 100,000 spectators, with over half the crowd travelling from outside Victoria. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:35am local time to align with prime time US television schedules.
The two California-based teams have adopted contrasting strategies to combat jet lag from the 17-hour time difference. The 49ers arrived late last week to acclimatise, while the Rams plan to arrive on Thursday morning, play on Friday, and return to the US west coast shortly after.
This game is the first of three NFL matches scheduled for Melbourne over the next four years, under a contract between the league and the state of Victoria. The NFL's managing director and head of NFL International, Gerrit Meier, stated the league's preference for annual games in Australia.
