The NHS has launched its national booking system today, 17 August 2026, allowing millions of eligible people to pre-book their flu vaccinations. This initiative marks an earlier start to winter preparations for the health service.
Vaccinations are set to commence on 1 September for certain eligible groups, including pregnant women and children. Local NHS services are expected to send invites to these individuals next month via GP practices, the NHS app, or by letter.
Other cohorts, such as those aged 65 and over, adults in clinical risk groups, and care home residents, will begin receiving their jabs from 1 October. The NHS aims to protect those at risk and reduce hospitalisations, as flu season typically peaks in December and January.
Chief Nursing Officer for England, Duncan Burton, stated that the flu jab is a key defence against winter illness, helping to prevent serious illness and hospital admissions. Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Yvette Cooper, highlighted the vital role vaccinations play in protecting vulnerable individuals and easing pressure on the NHS.
