NHS hospitals across England are set to benefit from over £1.5 billion in investment aimed at tackling urgent problems with buildings and facilities. The funding is intended to make hospitals safer, more resilient, and better equipped to care for patients.
More than £200 million will be directed towards 10 major hospital projects, which include new operating theatres, a new children's ward, and improved maternity and mental health facilities. An additional £1.3 billion will be used for maintenance, safety, and resilience improvements across the NHS estate.
This investment also includes over £32 million specifically for projects to enhance cooling and ventilation systems, aiming to strengthen hospitals' ability to withstand extreme heat. The government stated that this will help hospitals prepare for winter and extreme weather, protecting capacity and alleviating pressures on the health sector.
Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, noted that while hospitals have traditionally focused on winter pressures, the NHS now faces new challenges, including periods of extreme heat and sustained year-round pressure on services. She stated that the investment will help hospitals remain safe, open, and able to care for patients during peak demand.
