The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) has called an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) for Tuesday, 4 August 2026, in an effort to prevent a delay to the new Irish Premiership and Championship seasons. The 2026-27 season is set to kick off this Friday with Cliftonville hosting Crusaders in the Premiership and Strabane Athletic facing Institute in the Championship.
The potential delay stems from a legal challenge involving Banbridge Town. Banbridge Town, along with nine other clubs, were moved from the Premier Intermediate League (PIL) to the newly formed Conference League, which will be run by the Northern Amateur Football League (NAFL). This decision meant these clubs were no longer NIFL members, a move deemed "unlawful" by the Irish FA's appeals committee after Banbridge Town's appeal.
NIFL has called the EGM with its 47 member clubs to seek ratification of its articles, rules, and regulations. While an EGM typically requires a 21-day notice period, NIFL is understood to be meeting with clubs on Tuesday to try and prevent a possible delay to the season's start. For the EGM to proceed, 90% of the clubs (43 of 47) must agree, and then 75% of those clubs would need to vote with NIFL.
If the EGM does not take place or the vote fails to gain approval, NIFL could still proceed with the season as planned, but may face potential legal challenges from clubs.
